Tutorials
So now I have switched over to unity I decided to undertake a tutorial I found on their site about how to make a very simple one screen, one mouse button click game. Seeing as this covered a lot of the basics on how to do things I thought it would be a good entry point. The tutorial was split up into 10 online videos and I sat through and watched them all, then I went back to the beginning and re-watched them whilst building what they were saying. This took way longer than anticipated because I made a couple of mistakes and had to work out how to fix them, one mistake took about an hour to fix and I did even contemplate re-starting all over again.
What I have found though is that Unity is indeed pretty powerful and complex but obviously for what I ended up making it really wasnt pushing it much. After getting the tutorial done, I then set about adding in some of my own ideas, like making the game speed up as you scored points as it currently just ambled along at the same speed constantly. This was easily enough achieved, but meant I had to adapt the script that placed the objects so as to make sure that also upped it's rate as you went along. It took a little tweaking but I got this working . I then set about creating a home menu screen to get you into the game to learn how to do that and whilst it took a couple of attempts and looks rubbish it works at least.
I then was able to compile and export my finished game and it all worked ok, apart from some minor font issues that it took me 20 mins to sort. This has set me up with a taste of how all of this works and I am now moving onto creating my first idea from scratch. I have decided to take one of my old flash games and see if I can re-create that much like I was trying to do with the previous software.
