And we have something

Well after finding a php library to work along with the flickr api, i set about setting up an account and connecting to it via the api. This in theory sounds easy but in actual fact is much harder than it sounds. So much so that i abandoned this step for the time being and focused on pulling information out through the api without verification.

This seems to be working well and i can pull out and display new public pictures being uploaded to flickr, limit the amount of results the api returns and target other calls in the api to return more information based on the picture's owner.

I also manged to put together a very rudimentary profile search facility but it works intermitantly due to strange things to do with user profile names. You basically have to get the exact name of the profile in order to get a result. So say you were searching for Mr Happy Sunshine, but his profile name was MrHappySunshine. You would have to search without the spaces to get a resilt. This doesn't sound bad but it does get annoying when searching for a profile name that your not sure how it should be spelt (space/no spaces) to get a result.
